What to Wear When it’s Freezing Outside

If you thought you’d jaunt down to Florida to escape the cold weather this week, just know that my family got 8 inches of snow there yesterday! How crazy is that? I’ve been bundling up extra this week while I stuff up drafty corners of my apartment, and I wanted to share some of the pieces that I’ve been eyeing. These are things I either own and want more of, or things I want to invest in to make getting dressed when it is down right frigid a little more enjoyable and fun!

1. A Wrap Coat

I have two wool coats in my possession, but I don’t own anything in this silhouette. I’ve long lusted after many of the coats that the royal family wear during the colder months, and Meghan Markle specifically had a number of beautiful wrap coats that were drool-worthy! I prioritize trying to find ones in 100% wool or as close to it as I can get depending on my budget. This one is my pipe-dream coat… maybe one day! This option seems to run very oversized, so size down! Here’s a major sale score that is wool and cashmere. I also like this option’s exaggerated collar!

2. Leather Gloves

If you’re like me, then you’ve probably been holding on to some $7 Target cotton “tech” gloves that were cool when they first came out… back in 2010ish. That’s over a decade that I’ve been holding onto these sad little cotton gloves, and while they’ve served me incredibly well, I can’t say that I enjoy wearing them. I deign to throw them out, so I’ll keep them for going on walks and such, but if we’re trying to elevate our winter wardrobes… they gotta go! Try a pair like these from the OG winter brand, Canada Goose. Or maybe something a little brighter in a cognac leather like these! Or, even better, if you often find your wrist exposed to the elements, try these with a knit cuff!

3. Cashmere Wrap Scarf

A lot of things have changed about Quince since I originally purchased this scarf from them. I don’t know how much I align with the way they’ve postured themselves with dupe culture; however, their original house products have been really impressive— most specifically their cashmere! This scarf is huge and feels great to wear; it’s soft and washes well (I soak mine in Eucalan). I can’t recommend it enough! I’m really considering it in the Oatmeal color as well.

4. Silk Base Layer Tee

Most people will tell you to wear a tee-shirt under your knits, and I’m just starting to truly learn that lesson. I’ve worn poly-cotton blends under my knits primarily, but I’m wondering how much better a silk layer would work underneath! That sounds bougier than I want it to, but I’ve always heard great things about silk for the winter— and now that I don’t live in Florida where we sweat right through it, I feel like I can give silk the chance it deserves. This one from Land’s End is already a great deal, but it’s also currently 40%!

5. Tall Compression Socks

Mitch gives me the hardest time about wearing compression socks, but they are so. dang. functional!!!!! Not only do they alleviate aches in your legs, they’re also great if you’re like me and have calves that are just a liiiiiittle bit wider than your standard boot size. Throw on a pair of these, and you’ll ahve a much easier time getting tall boots on! They’re also really nice to sleep in, if you don’t mind wearing socks to bed. I like these ones from Comrad, but these from Bombas might be a little less snug.

6. OPI’s Nail Envy

This stuff saves my nails in the winter! I am not even remotely okay with how easily my nails break off, chip, and crack during the colder months, so I do everything I can to save them. This has been a holy-grail product for me for years and I love that OPI has introduced colored versions of this nail strengthener so that you can get a true 2-in-1 miracle product. I love the Bubble Bath color when I’m itching for something classically nude-pink, but I also really like layering the clear under my regular manis!

7. Fleece-Lined Sheer Illusion Tights

If you’ve ever wondered how girls are wearing semi-sheer tights in freezing temperatures, they’re either getting frostbite or they’re wearing these! Whoever came up with the idea for tights like this is a genius, because I know that for me sometimes the fashion is going to win and I desperately want to look cute… or I’m just going to veg out on the couch and stay in sweats! If you’re a fan of dresses or shorter skirts in the winter but want to keep warm, these are definitely the ticket! These have over 10,000 reviews on Amazon, and these have multiple thickness options!

8. Insulated Puffer Coat

When we’re talking warmth, you know an insulated puffer coat has got to be thrown in the mix! This version is a play on the wrap coat we talked about earlier and comes in tan and black! This one from North Face I’ve had for almost a decade and it’s still going strong! It’s a little more sporty— especially because of the logos— but it’s great for coffee runs or walks in the snow. Like something in the middle? Try this one from Uniqlo that is down-filled sans logo.

9. Ear Muffs

I want to tell you something responsible like, “buy a wool or cashmere beanie! Get something that’s fleece-lined!” but I cannot. I’m vain! If you are like me and don’t want to always have to sacrifice your good hair days to freezing temps and/or are going in and out constantly and don’t want to deal with the hat hair static, try ear muffs! These dark leopard print ones look like fur and are so so chic!

10. Toe Warmers

Is it embarrassing to tell you that I thought up until very recently that people just put HotHands packets in their shoes if they were going to be out in the cold? Didn’t know they had these nifty little things until… well, very recently. While they’re not themselves very chic, I do think these little guys will make you feel better and much more comfortable head to toe (or… toe to head, in this case)!

11. Shearling Slippers

I will never admit this to her face (she’ll read it here and that’s enough), but I had a friend tell an ex-boyfriend of mine to buy me slippers— not moccasins— when he was debating what to get me once for Christmas while we were dating. He got me moccasins and I wear them to this day… but they are definitely the less-fashionable cousin to the slippers. Mitch has a matching pair, so I still wear them all the time and they’re very warm!

If however, like me, you’re looking for a more feminine version of your Wicked Good moccasins, try the slipper version! They’re lined in sherpa as well, so they’re extra cozy. These are another great slipper option!

xx happy hunting!
